Arizona Military and Energy Land Use Plan
The Arizona Military and Energy Land Use Plan (AME-UP) is a Department of Defense initiative to help military installations, regulatory agencies, local governments, and renewable energy developers coordinate efforts in building renewable energy projects within the State of Arizona.
The Need for AME-UP
The State of Arizona is currently the second most prolific generator of solar energy in the United States, and will continue to lead the country in developing renewable energy resources (U.S. Energy Information Administration). While this is an economic advantage to the state, new energy infrastructure can potentially encroach on military operations. Improperly sited locations may compromise military missions, endanger military personnel, or result in costly construction delays for developers and consumers.
How does AME-UP work?
AME-UP brings together various stakeholders from the military, government, and industrial communities to facilitate communication and coordination. Project stakeholders include…
- Military (All Branches)
- City of Surprise
- Arizona Corporation Commission
- Arizona Game and Fish
- Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs
- Arizona Geological Survey
- Arizona Governor’s Office
- Arizona State Land Department
- Arizona State Senate
- Arizona State University – Global Institute of Sustainability
- Arizona Utilities (SRP, APS, TEP, Coops)
- City and County Leaders
- Subject Matter Experts
- Non-Governmental Organizations
- The Sonoran Institute
- Western Regional Partnership
- U.S. Bureau of Land Management
- U.S. Forest Service
- Western Regional Office Bureau of Indian Affairs
Each of these members have contributed input and data to an online tool that enables prospective developers to quickly assess whether a desired location is potentially in conflict with military, wildlife, energy infrastructure, or other government regulations. In addition, it serves as an interactive community planning resource to spur discussion and collaborative siting for renewable energy projects, while respecting parameters and requirements of military bases and installations.
What are the features of the AME-UP tool?
Contact info
Contact information for relevant regulatory agencies governing the development of energy projects throughout the State.
Military restrictions
Maps of military zones and flight paths where development is prohibited or undesirable.
Areas of special interest
Maps of culturally, historically, or ecologically sensitive areas that may complicate or preclude energy development.
